MRC Plants 1,500 Saplings, Leads Climate Action on World Environment Day 2026

Wellington, 05 Jun 2026: The Madras Regimental Centre (MRC), Wellington, commemorated World Environment Day 2026 under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” with a large scale plantation drive, environmental outreach programmes and sustainability initiatives.

As part of the celebrations, 1,500 saplings were planted across the station under the Miyawaki Forest concept to create dense, self-sustaining green ecosystems, enhance biodiversity and strengthen ecological resilience.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation by soldiers, families and children, who pledged to nurture and protect the saplings and adopt environmentally responsible practices. A ‘No Plastic’ pledge was also administered to reaffirm the commitment towards sustainable living.

In a significant outreach initiative, MRC engaged with local schools to sensitise the next generation towards environmental stewardship. Through interactive awareness programmes, students were encouraged to become active custodians of nature and partners in safeguarding the fragile ecosystem of the Nilgiris.

Speaking on the occasion, Brig Krishnendu Das, Commandant, MRC, highlighted that the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall, landslides and soil erosion in the Nilgiris are stark indicators of the growing impact of climate change and underscore the need for urgent collective action. He emphasised that the Earth is not an inheritance to be consumed by the present generation, but a trust to be preserved for those who follow. He added that every sapling planted today is a meaningful step towards restoring ecological balance, enhancing climate resilience and securing a greener, safer and more sustainable future.

The event reinforced commitment towards climate action, environmental conservation and the preservation of the unique ecological heritage of the Nilgiris.
